Lot numbers and traceability
A lot is a quantity of material made in one production run. Every vial from that run carries the same lot number.
Why it matters
The lot number connects a vial to its batch record and its certificate of analysis. If a question comes up months later, it is the key to the full history of that material.
Good practice
Record the lot number of every vial you open in your lab notebook, next to the experiment it was used in. Use the COA lookup to retrieve the certificate at any time.
